Dance Floor Etiquette - the Do's and Don'ts
Because good manners count even on a dance floor....
Dance floor etiquette shouldn't be considered as a bunch of rules to impede your fun, but rather as just a few common sense pointers about good dance floor behaviour to help ensure everyone has fun.
Do...
- Encourage and help beginners if you know a dance - remember, everyone starts off as a beginner.
- Replace someones drink if you accidentally spill or knock it over.
- Apologise if you bump or collide with someone, even if it wasn't your fault.
- Always give way to couples dancing round the edge of the dance floor, it is customary to leave the outside edge of the floor clear for couples.
- Start off a new line, rather than join an existing one and block the outside of the floor.
- Start off dances at the front of the floor, leaving room behind you for others to join.
- Applaud and appreciate the band or act, they work hard for you!
- Take small steps on a crowded dance floor, remember, the more the merrier!
- Follow the Line of Dance (anti clockwise) when dancing round the edge of the floor.
- Always... smile and have fun!
Don't...
- Walk across a floor with drinks or food, spillages can cause accidents.
- Stand and talk on the floor, always leave the floor to chat.
- Never walk through dancers on the floor, walk around the floor to get to that bar :-)
- Start a different dance unless there's plent of room at the back of the floor.
- Never allow children to run across a dance floor.
- Don't turn your limbs into dangerous objects by doing variations like fast spins or high kicks.
